Alternatives to IRS Form 1099-NEC
- 17 January 2024
Tax season is upon us, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made some changes to its forms and procedures. While the 1099-NEC form for 2023 is commonly used to report non-employee compensation, a few other forms may be useful for taxpayers.
- 1099-MISC
One alternative to the 1099-NEC form is the 1099-MISC. This form reports payments made to contractors, subcontractors, and other self-employed individuals. This form is used to report income received from services, rent, royalties, and other income that is not reported on other forms. The form also requires reporting of payments of $600 or more made in a particular year. - 1040-ES
For those who are self-employed, the 1040-ES form is also available. This form estimates the amount of taxes that will be owed for the year. It also includes a deduction for self-employment tax for those who qualify. - 1099-K
Another form that may be of use to taxpayers is the 1099-K. Payment settlement entities use this form to report payments made during a business. This includes payments made through PayPal and other online payment platforms. The form reports payments from third-party networks and other payment settlement entities. - Schedule C (Form 1099)
In addition to the 1099 forms, the IRS also offers the Schedule C form. This form is used to report income and expenses for self-employed or with a side business. It calculates the business's net profit or loss and reports any taxes due. - W-2
Finally, the IRS also offers the W-2 form. Employers use this form to report wages, salaries, and other compensation. This form is also used to report taxes withheld from employee paychecks.
Each form has different requirements and should be used according to the reported income type. It is important to understand the differences between each form to ensure that the correct form is used and that all the necessary information is reported accurately.
